Permanent Partial Impairment (PPI) Ratings in Ohio

What Is a Permanent Partial Impairment Rating?

A Permanent Partial Impairment (PPI) rating is a standardized medical assessment that quantifies the degree of permanent functional loss resulting from an injury or illness. The rating is expressed as a percentage of whole-person impairment, calculated using the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment — the most widely accepted framework for impairment assessment in the United States.

PPI ratings are a critical component of workers' compensation proceedings. They are used to determine settlement amounts, calculate permanent disability benefits, and support the formal closure of workers' compensation claims.

When Is a PPI Rating Required?

A PPI rating is typically required when a claimant has reached Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) — the point at which their condition has stabilized and is unlikely to improve further with treatment. At MMI, the treating or examining physician can assess what permanent impairment remains and issue a formal PPI rating.

In Ohio, PPI ratings are required for certain workers' compensation claim settlements and are used by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation to determine the appropriate level of permanent partial disability compensation.
