Fitness for Duty Evaluations in Ohio — For Employers and HR
What Is a Fitness for Duty Evaluation?
A Fitness for Duty (FFD) evaluation is a medical assessment that determines whether an employee is physically and cognitively capable of safely performing the essential functions of their specific job. FFD evaluations are conducted by a physician with no prior relationship with the employee, ensuring the opinion is objective and legally defensible.
When Should an Employer Request an FFD Evaluation?
An employer may appropriately request an FFD evaluation when an employee is returning from a medical or psychiatric leave of absence, when there are observable concerns about an employee's ability to safely perform their job, when an employee has reported a medical condition that may affect their work performance or the safety of others, when there is a question about whether a requested accommodation is medically supported, or when an employee has had repeated unexplained absences with a claimed medical basis.
Legal Compliance — ADA, FMLA, and Ohio Law
FFD evaluations must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and applicable Ohio employment laws. Dr. Onamusi's FFD evaluations are structured to remain within these legal frameworks — assessing only job-relevant functional capacity and avoiding impermissible inquiries into disability status. The resulting report clearly documents findings, functional restrictions, and recommended accommodations in a format designed for HR and legal use.
