FMLA Medical Assessments in Ohio — Independent Evaluations for Employers

What Is an FMLA Medical Assessment?

An FMLA Medical Assessment is an independent medical evaluation that determines whether an employee's claimed condition qualifies for protection under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and assesses the functional limitations that affect the employee's ability to work. Employers may request a second or third medical opinion under FMLA regulations when they have a good-faith reason to question the validity or scope of a leave certification.

When Do Employers Need an Independent FMLA Assessment?

When the treating physician's certification is incomplete, inconsistent, or vague, when the employee's attendance pattern raises questions about the medical necessity of intermittent leave, when the scope of leave requested seems inconsistent with the claimed condition, or when the employer needs clear documentation of functional limitations to manage scheduling and accommodation decisions compliantly.

What Dr. Onamusi's FMLA Assessment Covers

Whether the claimed condition meets the FMLA definition of a serious health condition, the nature and extent of the employee's functional limitations, whether the limitations are consistent with the claimed diagnosis, the expected duration and frequency of leave needed, and any work restrictions or accommodations that may allow the employee to return to work sooner or in a modified capacity.
