Independent Medical Examinations (IME) in Ohio

What Is an Independent Medical Examination?

An Independent Medical Examination (IME) is a medical evaluation performed by a neutral, board-certified physician who has no prior treatment relationship with the person being examined. The IME physician's role is not to treat — it is to provide an objective, evidence-based medical opinion on specific questions posed by the referring party.

IMEs are used in workers' compensation disputes, personal injury litigation, disability adjudications, and insurance claim reviews. The written report produced by the IME physician is a critical document in legal and administrative proceedings — and its value depends entirely on the neutrality, expertise, and thoroughness of the physician who conducted it.

IME Services Provided by Dr. Onamusi

Dr. Babatunde Onamusi, MD, MPH is a board-certified Occupational and Environmental Medicine physician with over 25 years of IME experience in Ohio. Every evaluation he conducts addresses the specific questions you need answered, including:

  • Causation — Is the claimed condition related to the reported injury or workplace exposure?

  • Diagnosis — Is the diagnosis supported by the objective clinical findings and available records?

  • Treatment appropriateness — Is the current or proposed treatment medically necessary and consistent with evidence-based guidelines?

  • Functional capacity — What are the examinee's actual physical limitations and work restrictions?

  • Maximum Medical Improvement — Has the claimant reached MMI, and if so, what permanent limitations remain?

Who Requests IMEs from Metrix Medical?

Workers' compensation defense attorneys and plaintiff attorneys, personal injury attorneys on both sides of a case, insurance carriers and third-party claims administrators, self-insured employers, the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, and HR departments managing disputed leave or injury claims.

What to Expect from the IME Process

The referring party submits all available medical records, imaging reports, prior evaluations, and a list of specific questions to be addressed. Dr. Onamusi reviews all documentation thoroughly before the evaluation date. On the evaluation day, he conducts a focused physical examination relevant to the claimed condition. He then produces a comprehensive, clearly written report addressing each question posed — typically within 7 to 14 business days of the examination.

Why Dr. Onamusi's IME Reports Are Defensible

Dr. Onamusi's reports are grounded in published clinical guidelines and objective examination findings, structured to address each question posed with transparent, traceable reasoning, and written by a physician with no stake in the outcome. These qualities make his opinions highly resistant to challenge in deposition, hearing, or courtroom settings.
